District Attorney Don Quick Announces Charges Against Valdez

17th Judicial District Attorney, District Attorney Don Quick announced today the filing of criminal charges in connection with the shooting of a man in the parking lot of a bar in Adams County, Colorado.

John Valdez (DOB: 02/06/1986) was charged with First Degree Murder (F1), Possession with Intent to Manufacture or Distribute a Controlled Substance (F3), Vehicular Eluding (F5), Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender (F5).

On December 8, 2011 at 1:37 AM an Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy was on regular patrol in the area of 7950 Federal Blvd. in unincorporated Adams County when he heard a gunshot and observed a person fall to the ground. The victim was identified as Javier Raucho-Benitez (DOB: 04/10/1985).

The deputy was approached by a witness who said his friend had been shot and the suspects left in a red car. The identified vehicle was pursued by law enforcement for approximately .6 miles through a residential area. When the vehicle was stopped, the driver Valdez, from Longmont, fled on foot. Valdez was quickly tracked by a police dog and arrested by an ACSO deputy. The victim was transported to St. Anthony’s hospital and was pronounced deceased.

Valdez is scheduled to appear in Adams County District Court for a preliminary hearing on January 27, 2011, 1:30 PM in Division F.
