GOV. RITTER JOINS SECRETARY SHINSEKI AT NEW VETERANS HOSPITAL GROUNDBREAKING

Gov. Bill Ritter today joined U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki to break ground on the new stand alone Veterans Hospital on the Fitzsimons campus. The new hospital will serve veterans from Colorado, Utah , Montana , Wyoming , and portions of Idaho , Kansas , Nebraska , Nevada and North Dakota . Afterwards, Gov. Ritter met with Secretary Shinseki briefly, and issued the following statement:

“Today we stand on hallowed ground thanks to the excellent care the men and women of Fitzsimons Hospital gave to the wounded soldiers treated there. The new stand-alone hospital will honor that legacy.”

Governor Ritter also spoke to the audience about the lessons he learned from a visit last February to the current Veterans Administration hospital in Denver , during National Hospitalized Veterans Week. “I listened to Vietnam veterans who suffered from post-traumatic distress syndrome that remained undiagnosed and untreated for decades. We now know much more about mental illness, and this new facility will ensure that those who serve our military at home and in foreign theaters will get the health care they need to re-enter society after their service.”
